History and Geography Challenge Day 14.12.16

During the last week of the Autumn term, children from across school participated in a history and geography challenge day. As part of the new curriculum, the children in school have to learn about significant events outside of living memory. To support their learning, we organised a ‘Viking’ morning, where the children watched a show performed by ‘Tempus Fugit.’ In the show, we met a Viking warrior’s wife named Freya. She talked to us about the history of the Vikings and about her daily life. After break, we completed a Geography workshop where we learnt about the Viking settlers. We had to find the perfect place for a new Viking settlement on our school playground! We thoroughly enjoyed our morning and learnt such a lot!

Freya showed us around her home and talked to us about the clothes she wears. Some of us got to dress up as a Viking!

We learnt about the jobs that the Vikings would have done.

We found out what the Vikings invaded from and located the countries on a map.

We then learnt about what Viking settlers would look for in a new settlement. We shared our ideas in a group.

Finally we went out in groups to explore the school playground. Our settlement had to have good farming land, be close to a water supply and have trees close by. We learnt that the Vikings used wood for firewood and to build with.

We loved learning about the Vikings!
