Black History Month – Doves

To celebrate Black History Month and to support our continued learning about tolerance, kindness and understanding of others, we watched the Bigfoot Education film on All Aboard The Windrush. The children were fascinated to learn about the journey that many people took from Jamaiaca to the UK in 1948. They could not believe that it took 3 weeks to make such a journey by boat and that the price would be quite so high per ticket – £28 and 10 shillings! The film sparked lots of conversations about carnivals (both in Notting Hill and in Potternewton Park, Leeds) and the importance of such things in sharing the food, music and culture of those who travelled over on The Windrush. Further to this, the children were intrigued about other civil rights activists, such as: Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks and many more. Please ask your child what they remembered about today’s film and continue the dialogue around the importance of accepting and, most importantly, learning and celebrating other cultures.
