LKS2 DT – Let’s Make Kites!

After exploring the history of kites, the three classes, Falcons, Woodpeckers and Red Kites, dedicated a full day to design, create and fly their own kites.

To kick off the day, we all gathered in the hall, being welcomed in by ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’ from the film Mary Poppins. We recapped the knowledge from previous lessons and gave an overview of what the day was going to involve.

The children then paired up to design, evaluate and make. The KS2 area was split into stations and the children moved along like a carousel. Firstly, they sawed their wooden dowels, then moved on to tying them together using string. The children had great teamwork; one holding the dowels in the place, while the other tied the knots.

In the afternoon sessions, the classes attached their sails to their frame and added on their flying lines, then their kites were complete!

To finish off the day, all three classes went outside to test out their creations, each partner taking a turn to fly their kites.

Have a look for yourself at how much fun we had!
