Woodpeckers Topic – Athens Vs Sparta!

Posted on by Miss Ingram

This morning in Woodpeckers, we took on the challenge of deciding whether we would have wanted to live in Athens or Sparta during the Ancient Greek Period.

To start with, we looked at how Ancient Greece was divided up into city states and discovered that each state had their own ways of living and governing their area. After this, we looked specifically at what life was like in Athens and Sparta. We found out about their governments, education, what life was like for girls, what life was like for boys and their armies. Once we’d gathered this info, we discussed the similarities and differences between them, before making our own decisions about which city state we would have preferred to live in.

At the end of the session we took a vote… it’s seems most of Woodpeckers would liked to have lived in the infamous city state of Sparta! Their beliefs that girls could be educated and taught to fight, alongside their army being trained to protect their land, captured the attention of the majority. Those who preferred Athens, liked their views of building an army to expand their empire, as well as them seeing other arts and culture activities as important.
