Doves’ own report of their learning this afternoon:
In Science we have been trying to separate different materials that had been mixed together. We learnt the difference between a solution and a mixture and we tested whether we could filter them.
We learnt that a mixture can be separated by using a sieve or filter (this took ages to do!) but that a solution cannot.
Upon further investigation, we found out that filtering can be done in lots of ways depending on the size of the particles. When the particles are very similar sizes, such as oats and rice, this is very difficult to do quickly!
We have started investigating whether a sugar solution can be separated by letting the water evaporate – we have left them on the windowsill to find out later this week.
We also found out that magnets are a very effective way to get paper clips out of rice!
