Hi, I’m Maria Hellyer and I’m very proud to be a Governor for Tranmere Park. I live locally and have three children, two at secondary school and one that started university in September 2018.
I’m an Incorporated Mechanical Engineer with IMechE and work as a Production Manager at a local manufacturing company that makes sealing machines primarily for the bakery industry. I’ve also spent a lot of time working out in Malawi, designing and building a small scale water treatment plant for the rural areas. I have regular contact with a school in Nkhata Bay in north Malawi, for visually impaired children that I help and support.
I’ve done a lot of STEM work in the past, going into schools and talking to pupils about how engineering, science and maths are all around us. In our day to day activities we find engineering in cars and buildings, science in your mobile phones and even maths in music! I feel well placed to contribute to the Teaching and Learning sub-committee. I aim to bring some of my experience to the school and pupils, sharing some of my experiences with pupils so they become more interested in STEM subjects and have a greater understanding of what engineers do.
