Online Safety Update

Posted on by wrightr
We have become increasingly aware of highly inappropriate videos circulating online, some of which may be accessed by children through their online internet use. These video clips/images are appearing on many social media sites and YouTube (including Kids YouTube). One of the videos starts innocently, like the start of a child’s cartoon but quickly turns into an altered version with violence and offensive language.
We have also been alerted to an avatar known as ‘MoMo.’ This avatar shows a warped white mask which promotes children to do dangerous tasks without telling their parents. Some of these instructions have been extremely dangerous with life threatening consequences.
As you can imagine, this can be highly distressing for the children to view. We encourage our parents to be vigilant when your child is using any device or watching any clips. Although the information regarding MoMo is extremely concerning, the number of reported cases of child harm resulting from its appearance is extremely low.
As part of our work on online safety, we have reminded the children of the basic rules when working online. If something comes up that upsets you or gives you an uneasy (sometimes referred to as a ‘butterfly’) feeling:
1. Turn off the screen or if working on a tablet/phone turn it over
2. Go and tell a trusted adult
3. Always talk to your parents about what you are accessing and access the internet in a place where your internet access can be monitored
4. Do not give out your personal details online
