Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse
There will be a solar eclipse that will obscure up to 90% of the sun from our location next Friday (20th March). The eclipse will begin to be visible at 8:45 on Friday morning and will reach its maximum point at 9:31. As a school we hope to give all of the children the opportunity to view the eclipse but this obviously depends very much on the weather at the time.
Assuming we are fortunate enough to have clear skies we will take the whole school out to watch at around 9:25 so that they can see the most significant part. It is extremely dangerous for anyone to look directly at an eclipse as this can cause damage to people’s eyes. Because of this we would like to invite children to bring in one of the devices that can be used to view the eclipse safely.
These include commercially available eclipse glasses, a pinhole camera and a pinhole projector. These last 2 can be made at home using scrap materials for little or no cost – instructions are available below.
